Keep your teak furniture as the first day and enjoy the summer outdoors

12 July 2013 - 00: 00

Chairs, tables and accessories we have outside our home, often suffer enough with the weather and take care with good maintenance can assume that we enjoy for more or less time.

Outdoor furniture by Teka

The most suffered material for the outside are those made with teak wood. The teka is a dense and extremely durable wood with a high content of oil and wax.

The teak furniture is ideal for patios, porches and terraces, as their quality of fat makes it waterproof, mold and wood-eating insects.

While Teka can be more expensive than conventional tropical timber, the initial investment guarantees an attractive outdoor furniture which, if cared for properly, can last up to 80 years.

The teak furniture is easy to maintain. If you have been exposed to the elements and left untreated, teak will face a beautiful silver-gray patina after a few months. This change in the appearance of the wood does not affect the structural integrity of the furniture.

You may also notice other changes in the wood, such as the lifting of the grain in the arms and legs and the appearance of small cracks - this is normal when the wood expands and contracts as a reaction to climatic fluctuations.

How to clean a teak furniture

The untreated teak furniture requires little maintenance other than an annual cleaning to remove dirt and dust. To prepare a cleaning solution, add 1 / 4 cup dishwashing soap and one tablespoon of bleach in one gallon of water and rub furniture with a soft bristle brush.

Finish by rinsing the furniture thoroughly with fresh water. To remove stubborn stains, such as wine or oil, sand with a fine sandpaper and be sure to work with the direction of the grain.

Recover the natural color of the Teka

Although silver gray color that appears in the Teka over time adds rustic charm to the cabinet, some people may prefer restore restore furniture to restore its original color.

Restore the original appearance of teak is possible but requires effort and perseverance, at least to do it once a year.

Wash the pieces of teak wood with water and a soft bristle brush and soap and let dry.

    1. Apply a teak brightener to restore the original color and then rinse. The original color can also be returned gently sanding the entire surface of each piece, always working in the direction of the grain.
    2. Apply a UV blocking Teka sealant and let dry.
    3. Teka sealant should keep the original color of the wood for about a year.

Interesting post, I loved the part of the care of teak furniture, since it is very difficult as you may have noticed, restore the original color to teak furniture, you have to know about it, and treat it with care, since it is not as easy to do as with other furniture, and application of oil is highly irrecomendable, because it promotes mold in that kind of furniture, which wood and good taste of the furniture is ruined.
