The Department of Environment in collaboration with the owners of Hort Obert has carried out an innovative activity of Environmental Education, consisting of a guided tour and practical activities in organic garden during a morning.
This orchard, located opposite the Hacienda Delegation, at the end of the esplanade of Torrecremada, applies criteria and techniques of organic farming, from production of vegetable and animal compost to nourish the soil, presence of beneficial insects to control pests, use of herbs As regulators of temperature, and of course total absence of pesticides, pesticides and industrial fertilizers.
Quico Pastor and Eloísa Nicolás, youngsters with university studies of equipador, are now ecological producers of fruits and vegetables. Mondays sell directly at the door of the garden and on Friday in Magallanes street next to the municipal market. Also in the market of the riurau of Jesus Poor, in coordination with other ecological producers.
It is therefore a paradigmatic example of local agriculture (avoiding large displacements and pollution in transport), encouraging the consumption of local products, fresh and seasonal, recovery of the agricultural landscape in the vicinity of the town.
In the visit, guided by Quico, students learn basic concepts of organic farming with direct explanation of examples of plants, their functions and utilities, types of irrigation, compounds in different phases, function of beneficial insects, ecological farming tools, Bancal for the production of seeds, etc. Finally the students plant seeds in a nursery, a lettuce in a pot to take home, and a plant in the bancal.
The visits took place in the month of October and November, with a total of 238 students from Vessanes, Marist schools, Carmelitas, Cervantes and Pou de la Muntanya.
