The most read of 2020: the year of the coronavirus, but also of many other stories

31 December 2020 - 07: 50

We already knew that 2020 has been an exceptional year. The coronavirus has starred in our daily lives since in March we were surprised by writing a headline that, despite its striking, did not make us predict what would happen days later. The headline was: Failures postponed throughout the Community by the coronavirus alarm. We thought it was going to stay there but we soon found ourselves announcing the closure of bars and hotels, the closure of schools, and only a couple of days after learning about the suspension of the festivities we reported that a 15-day confinement was approved that ended up lasting 3 months.

And nothing was the same again after this.

Although not everything was COVID. During these 12 months we have covered thousands of news and stories that were not always under the shadow of the pandemic. 2020 may go down in history as the year of the coronavirus, but we have experienced much more.

News

Taking a walk through the most widely read news of the year, it is true that most of them are about the pandemic, but there is also room for others that have nothing to do with the coronavirus. We leave you examples of the most read in Dénia.com in terms of news.

The walk of the Marineta Casiana disappears due to the storm Gloria

In January we suffered the worst sea storm in history and one of the most shocking images are those left in the video that accompanies this news. The waves completely engulf the walk making the sea reach the roundabout of the Hotel Port Dénia.

A private individual tries to install a gate on a road in Les Rotes, leaving the entire neighborhood without access

Sometimes we tell events that make us think that we still live inside a Berlanga film. The picaresque, so Spanish, can lead to somewhat surreal conflicts.

Big collapse of tons of rock barrier at the end of Les Rotes

Year after year the geography is redrawn as a result of the passage of time. But sometimes it does it so abruptly that it draws the attention of the neighbors as it is in this case.

Coronavirus

And, of course, the coronavirus. So many and so many news that we had to cover to achieve a feat that is not always recognized: that of informing the neighbors. It has not been easy, since regulations, decrees, relief measures and restrictions have constantly changed. And not only that, but we were forced to tell the situation of our municipality, our hospital and our region to record the reality that we lived and that, for now, we continue living.

The neighborhood response

But the pandemic has also brought precious images, of union to face a common enemy. Healthcare workers have been recognized, and these months have become the first line of defense against the coronavirus. For this reason we were punctual in windows and balconies, to send part of our support in the months of confinement.

reports

Not everything has been news. We have also worked hard to bring you stories that a priori go unnoticed, but that we thought were interesting enough to bring them to you. These have been the ones you liked the most:

More wood !: The story of Manuel Soler and the largest xiloteca in Spain

Hidden among the small streets of Les Rotes, a few meters from the sea, is a large plot of those that still respect the vegetation of the place. Where you can glimpse what in other times was the area, which has now been taken over by cement. Large and leafy trees among which Manuel Soler lives, in an idyllic fairytale cabin that he himself built a short distance from his most precious treasure. Despite the ignorance of most of the neighbors, at the back of the plot, in another wooden house that also came out of their hands, the largest xiloteca in Spain is hidden.

What happened to the Portland factory?

For many young people in Dénia, the Portland Factory may simply be the abandoned factory next to the Pinaret d'Elies. They are used to seeing the silhouette of their fireplace appear in the distance from time to time. But few people know its history and what it meant for Dénia. And the few that remain find it difficult to speak, there is a general silence on the subject. However, Carles Doménech, a recently retired professor at the Chabàs Historian Institute and at the UNED, has carried out historical research to delve into this part of our industrial heritage. An outreach work on the labor, economic and industrial history of Dénia from the postwar period until the death of Franco. You have found many answers, and at the same time, new questions.

Why is it hotter in Dénia than in Xàbia?

Xàbia-Dénia, two populations of the Marina Alta from which they are only 7 km away and suffer very different meteorological changes. The two municipalities are separated by the Massif del Montgó, protagonist of this climatic difference.

Interviews

Also this 2020 has had protagonists. We wanted to be with them so that they could tell us their stories and answer any questions we had. We leave you the most read:

Vicent Grimalt, Mayor of Dénia

The Mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, he gave us an interview last September to shed some light on the confusion and to tell us how the mayor of a municipality lives something that attacks an entire planet.

Vicent Salvà, UCI supervisor: "We live with concern and some anguish this situation that affects us very closely"

One of those toilets who had to fight on the front line. Salvà attended us at the beginning of the pandemic to tell us about the situation at the Hospital and how the ICU was dealing with the coronavirus.

La Fúmiga: "If culture saved us when we were confined, it will also save us now"

The cultural sector has been one of those that have suffered the most from these crises. Movies have been discontinued, theaters have had to close, and stages have been in dust for too long. However, on occasions the planets have been aligned and the culture of the new normal has been promoted. The group La Fúmiga was the first to give a great concert in the Marina Alta in a totally different panorama, with strong prohibitions and, of course, mandatory masks.
