The Local Police of Dénia rescues two young people adrift on a windsurf board in the sea

August 10 from 2022 - 22: 22

Members of the Maritime Surveillance Service of the Dénia Local Police have rescued, around 17:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, two young people on a small windsurfing board used as a canoe, since they had been dragged by the sea and the wind about a half mile from the shoreline.

While the agents were carrying out their tasks of monitoring the marked bathing areas, specifically in the section between the beach of Punta Molins and l'Almadrava, have been able to observe approximately half a mile from the coast, an object that could appear to be a board with one or two people on board. When they approached it, they verified that it was two young people who, with a single oar, tried unsuccessfully to reach the coast. Both were fine but they were scared since they could not reach land due to the wind that was moving them further and further away.

After boarding them both on the boat of the Maritime Surveillance Service, they have approached the beach of Punta Molins and have disembarked them, taking charge of their parents.

How to avoid these situations at sea

From the Local Police they insist on the importance that users of floating devices take into account the wind and sea conditions before going out to practice their sport, avoiding going to sea if the wind direction takes them away from the coast. In addition, a family member or friend should always be notified of the departure and of an estimated time of arrival so that, in case of not arriving on time, the emergency services can be activated.

Likewise, they recommend going to sea with some system that allows you to notify if there is an emergency (a mobile phone with a waterproof case, for example), since this can reduce reaction times and facilitate a possible search.

Finally, they remember that in case of being adrift on some type of floating device (paddle boards, widsurfing, surfing, canoe or similar), they should not abandon it, having to stay on it trying to reach the coast and waiting to be located. .
