Dénia's new mission: increase the leisure time of young people on the street

27 September 2022 - 10: 11

Last Friday, the roadmap for the development of the mission related to childhood granted to Dénia within the Missions 2030 project was presented. The city has assumed the objective of ensuring that children and adolescents spend 30% of their leisure time in streets. The presentation of the project took place in the town hall with the presence of the General Director of Innovation, Sonia Tirado.

To achieve this goal, the Dénia City Council, in collaboration with Las Naves, the center for social and urban innovation of the city of Valencia, and the Valencia City Council, have devised a series of actions that focus on accessibility to the space public, healthy habits, redevelopment and environmental awareness, as pointed out by the Missions 2030 technician, Júlia Pineda, and the Missions Dénia technician, Víctor Montiel.

The Caminis initiative, put into operation before the presentation of the mission, aims to draw up a network of "friendly routes" in the areas of greatest child and youth traffic. Thus, the vicinity of parks, gardens and schools have already begun to adapt to guarantee safe access. On the other hand, two projects have been implemented that aim to open and rehabilitate public spaces for young people "because these - as the mayor of Dénia pointed out, Vicent Grimalt, in the act of presentation- they do not have spaces where they can go to play». For this reason, school playgrounds have already been opened during the weekends and the adaptation of parks for public use has begun.

The objective of building spaces in which the little ones can enjoy themselves safely will begin in Plaça Jaume I (garden leisure area) with an increase in the presence of security and an adaptation of the facilities as planned actions.

The commitment objective assumed by Dénia as a Child-Friendly City is to turn young people into agents with decision-making power and participatory initiative. As Marta Chillarón, president of La Naves in Valencia, outlined, it is essential "to think that they are equal [to adults], part of the territory, because it is a democratic exercise." An idea that was also pointed out by the Councilor for Education, Melani Ivars. For their part, two representatives of the Consell de la Infància i l'Adolescència (CLIA), Ainoa Aleksandrova and Toni Fornés, explained the need to have safe streets for the development of a committed and socially integrated youth.

What is Missions?

Missions, as Tirado defined it, is "a map" that marks the path in relation to the three transitions that he believes are taking place: social, technological and environmental. Dénia was one of the six towns in the Community chosen to take on the sustainable development project, in this case, linked to childhood.

Dénia, along with five other cities, is part of a sustainable innovation project that emerges as a European commitment. The Valencia City Council has assumed the task of leading the Missions 2030 initiative to ensure that Valencian cities adhere to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
