Sex education reaches the classrooms of the adolescents of the Marina Alta

Sexuality and the importance of maintaining safe sexual practices are being protagonists these days in the classrooms of 2nd and 3rd ESO of the educational centers of the Marina Alta.

There, midwives and nurses of the Department of Health of Dénia teach some workshops that are part of the Sexual Education Intervention Program (PIES) whose general objective is education in values ​​that promote a positive experience of one's sexuality and sexual behaviors chords with the healthiest options.

Those responsible for the PIES Program of the Department of Health of Dénia point out the importance of educating adolescents in their sexuality. Silvia Crespo, Midwifery Supervisor of the Department of Health of Dénia, emphasizes that "the average age of sexual relations has decreased in recent years. It is essential to educate adolescents to avoid unwanted pregnancies and prevent risky sexual practices."

The FEET is an activity of the Health and Education Councils. The overall coordination of the program corresponds to the General Directorate of Public Health. The program is developed thanks to the joint work of the health promotion technicians, who develop the coordination and training tasks of the professionals together with the sexologists of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Centers; and primary care staff, especially nurses and midwives, who teach the workshops in the classrooms, in collaboration with the educational psychologists or teachers responsible for the PIES in schools.

The workshops contain a basic set of subjects and objectives adapted to compulsory secondary education, collected in three competency units:

  • Unit 1. We are sexed beings. Sexuality as experiential experience.
  • Unit 2. I explore, I recognize and I mean my body.
  • Unit 3. The sexual behaviors Risk assessment and decision.
