Denia Hospital sensitizes patients and families to acquired brain damage

On the occasion of World Acquired Brain Injury Day, the Hospital de Dénia It has an information desk attended by volunteers from cerebrum, the association of those affected by acquired brain damage of the Marina Alta.

The objective of the information campaign is to sensitize and guide patients and family members about the acquired brain damage; offer recommendations to prevent it and give support to the patients or relatives of those affected. And, every year 100,000 new cases of Acquired Brain Damage (ACD) are detected in Spain. In all the Comunitat Valenciana there are some 56.000 cases of DCA and new 8.000s are registered each year.

Esther Romaguera, a neuropsychologist at the Department of Health of Denia, says that some of the keys to avoiding strokes are "Maintain a balanced diet, exercise regularly, avoid smoking and drug use and limit alcohol consumption".

The two main causes of Acquired Brain Damage are stroke and head injury. Much of the brain damage could be avoided by taking into account their risk factors and taking preventive measures.

The 70% of brain injury that causes brain damage are the result of traffic accidents, most of these accidents have causes related to speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. To avoid traffic accidents from the Cerebrum association warn that: "You should never drive under the influence of narcotic drugs and you must respect the rules of road prevention: wear a seat belt, wear a helmet on two-wheelers and follow the traffic rules".
