February 07 from 2019 - 13: 08

Hospital HLA San Carlos de Dénia has launched the Respiratory Unit, a pioneer in the entire region of the Marina Alta from Alicante.

The purpose of this unit is to prevent pneumological diseases such as those derived from tobacco consumption, a habit that is responsible for more than seven million deaths in the world, of which around six million are smokers and the rest are people exposed to smoke. second-hand tobacco, according to WHO.

Counseling and medication can double the likelihood that a smoker who wants to quit will get it, but on the path to change it is essential to control and monitor lung function to prevent chronic diseases and cancer.

One of the most used techniques is the complete pulmonary function tests (PFT), it is a painless study to assess the level of fatigue, to know the pulmonary function of the patient before surgery, to assess early lung disease and to choose the treatment that best suits each patient. Pulmonary function tests may be needed by smokers with a family history of respiratory pathologies or who have suffered respiratory problems at some point in their lives, as well as patients awaiting surgical interventions and those who initiate oncological, rheumatological or Internal Medicine treatments.

According to Dr. Rosaly Moreno, pulmonologist at the HLA center, it is recommended to perform the test "because it allows to identify, the impact of the indicated medications and the pre and post operative study of thoracic and abdominal surgery".

These respiratory tests help to know if the patient has any problem to inhale and exhale the air from the lungs, if the oxygen enters the body correctly, as well as perform a complete study of the level of fatigue and early diagnosis of respiratory diseases.
