HLA San Carlos warns that obesity is "a global health epidemic, beyond aesthetics"

22 December 2017 - 11: 40

"People who suffer from obesity can see their life expectancy diminished up to seven years", stand out from HLA San Carlos. And is that the Obesity Surgery Unit has involved six patients in their first weeks of activity.

The World Health Organization (WHO) lists obesity as 'the epidemic of the 21st century'. This disease, which worsens quality of life and drastically reduces survival, already affects 15% of adults who are obese and 38% who are overweight. While the incidence in children is between an 14 and an 26%.

HLA San Carlos Office of Denia, aware that these patients need to give a global solution to their situation, has a Laparoscopic Obesity Surgery Unit, which diagnoses, treats and makes a comprehensive follow-up of the case through a multidisciplinary team of surgical professionals, from Anesthesia and Resuscitation service, Psychology, Internal Medicine, Nutrition and Dietetics, Diagnostic Imaging, Endoscopy, Laboratory and Sleep Unit, who address the pathology from different fronts, applying the most advanced techniques and used as the gastric balloon, plication gastric , gastric tube or sleeve and gastric bypass.

"Each technique has its indication, advantages and disadvantages, which we explain to the patient who, ultimately, opts for one of the possible alternatives", says Dr. Alberto Bordallo, head of the unit and surgeon of the HLA Hospitable Group in Denia, and adds that "All surgery is done laparoscopically or minimally invasively".

Have I spent a few extra pounds?

Some people are aware that their weight has become a problem and turn to the unit, but often, the clinical picture is detected by other specialists who treat the patient (general practitioner, orthopedic surgeon, gastroenterologist, internist, etc.) who request an evaluation of the Obesity Surgery team.

"In our consultation we determine if the healthy weight threshold has been crossed by two methods, the measurement of the Body Mass Index (BMI) that divides the weight in kilos by the height in square meters and allow us to catalog the situation in which Find the patient according to the result. If you are between an 25 and 30 of IMC, we would be talking about overweight and, from 30 it would be a case of obesity "says Dr. Bordallo.

"At the same time, we apply the abdominal perimeter test that measures brown fat around the waist, being normal in a male up to 102 cm and up to 88 cm for women", illustrates the surgeon and adds that "Above these measures, we can ensure the existence of a risk of cardiovascular disease."

To the problems of obesity related to aesthetics (low self-esteem, difficulties in personal, work and sexual ties, etc.), associated diseases such as a higher cholesterol and triglycerides index, the appearance of type 2 diabetes mellitus , hypertension, heart and joint problems, sleep apnea and increased predisposition to the appearance of different types of cancer.

The Spanish Society of Surgery of Obesity, in addition to other international medical societies, considers that "this surgery should be indicated to patients with a BMI greater than 35 if it has associated pathologies or from 40 of BMI, although there are no other diseases" In patients with less than 35 IMC, "Each case is analyzed individually, taking into account associated diseases and the history of failures with other methods to lose weight", clarifies the dianense center surgeon.

What should I know about the intervention against obesity?

"Once assessed in consultation, informed of the options and agreed upon the method of intervention, it is necessary for the patient to pass a series of previous tests and undergo a preoperative diet around ten days", explains the HLA surgeon San Carlos, who calculates that "The entire process prior to the intervention can last two to three weeks".

Already in the intervention, the gastric balloon involves sedation and about thirty to forty minutes of surgery, after which the patient can return home in one or two hours. For its part, the gastric bypass can take up to three hours, and involves a postoperative hospitalization of approximately two days. In all cases, the patient's follow-up is extended with revisions for at least one year to guarantee the success of the treatment.

In HLA San Carlos de Denia, the Obesity Surgery Unit collaborates when necessary with Dr. Miguel Ángel Escartí, surgeon and head of other surgery units of obesity and diabetes HLA hospitals such as La Vega or Moncloa University, which counts to his credit with more than 2.000 patients operated on for obesity.
