This is the current state of the old fish market ... and it will be later

It is the only element that Denia maintains on foot of what was the port years ago. The remodeling of the area, over time, has made disappear buildings as characteristic as the fishermen's houses. Currently, only one building remains: the former fishermen's market.

Now, after years waiting for the money of the coveted Plan Confianza, the Consellería of housing, public works and vertebración of the territory has begun the works of rehabilitation of the building that until a few years it housed the fish market of Dénia. Since the creation of the new Pòsit building, the facilities of the former fish market have deteriorated to the point of risk.

The works that begin today will put value again this construction. With a budget of 991.403 euros, the works are estimated to last a year. The general actions consist in the demolition of all the different additions to the building that did not belong to the initial project. The canyisset, the area where the fish were sold, will be demolished, and a ceramic pavement with a limestone border of Calatorao will be placed on the left footprint.

It will also eliminate the elevated office area that was built with a metal structure and wooden panels and the bathrooms area built to service the premises for sale. Likewise, the roof of the building, made up of panels containing asbestos, a contaminating substance, will be changed. Instead, a new cover made of glass and perforated metal plate will be placed on its upper face that will evoke fishing nets. This metal sheet will be in charge of providing the necessary shade for the adequate thermal comfort in the interior of the building.

Among the actions that will be carried out are the removal of existing wood and the adequacy of the building to its new use, as well as the restoration of the façade. In the interior area the existing pavement will be removed and a new floor will be executed, previously waterproofed in its lower face.

The new use of the auction

After the rehabilitation of the building, which is scheduled to be completed next summer, the building of the former auction will be a multipurpose room. Failing to definitively complete it, its main use will be the Tourist Office. But it will also house a conference room and exhibitions, and could be the site of the future museum of the sea that the City Council wants to launch in collaboration with the Fishermen's Guild of Denia.

On the occasion of the beginning of the works, the Consellera of housing, public works and vertebración of the territory, MªJosep Salvador, has visited the building next to the mayor of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, And councilors of the municipal corporation.
