Interview with Dr. Moreno, from Glorieta Polyclinic, on the front line of COVID-19

16 July 2020 - 09: 28

Dr. Rosaly Moreno, from Roundabout Polyclinic, culminates the specialty of Pneumology at the La Fe University and Polytechnic Hospital in Valencia in 2013. He subsequently obtained the HERMES Certificate awarded by the European Respiratory Society and the Master in Chronic Respiratory Disease at the Catholic University of Murcia in 2014 and 2015 respectively. She is currently completing her Doctoral Thesis in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Valencia.

QUESTION: With all these years of studying and evaluating respiratory patients, what are you most passionate about in your specialty?

ANSWER: I believe in the direct relationship that exists between the symptom and the quality of life of each patient. The exercise of Pneumology must be able to identify the respiratory disease that still does not present symptoms and that could affect the short, medium and long-term daily life of a patient.

Q - Can respiratory diseases be present for many years before the first symptoms appear?

A -Of course, diseases such as asthma, COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), inflammatory and lung cancer, could present with few symptoms or be completely asymptomatic for months or years. If we diagnose them early, we will be more effective in the treatment, preventing the development of complications such as cardiac, neurological and psychiatric complications, among others, and preventing the progress of respiratory disease. In Pneumology, prevention (especially if there are habits such as tobacco and / or family history) is vital.

Q - And in the case of infectious diseases that occur on time?

A -In the case of respiratory infections, it is vital to treat on time. Pneumology specialists are aware that respiratory patients who become infected and / or enter due to pneumonia, bronchitis or even COVID-19 infection are not the same again, even in the case of patients previously considered healthy.

During the COVID pandemic we have witnessed the importance of identifying infected patients, treating them and controlling them due to the development of symptoms such as asthenia and fatigue that could become chronic and associated with diseases with a predisposition to thrombi in the venous system of our patients and including pulmonary fibrosis.
