The City Council of Dénia must continue working in coordination with the Hydrographic Confederation of Júcar and the Provincial Coastal Service of Alicante to ensure that all necessary measures are adopted in order to maintain, at all times, the mouth of the Girona River in a optimal cleaning and conservation status.

This request was made by the Ombudsman, José Cholbi, after receiving a complaint from a resident who denounced the terrible state of the Girona River due to the barrier of Posidonia which completely blocked its mouth, issued last March.

Problem at the mouth of the Girona River

The City Council confirmed to the Catalan Ombudsman the problems reported in a report in which it proposed a series of measures to be adopted by the different administrations affected to solve it. For its part, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar informed this institution that, at the beginning of June, it would proceed to dredge the river at its mouth, as it was.

However, the Catalan Ombudsman shares with the promoter of the complaint that this single measure, adopted in isolation, would turn out to be more of a patch than a long-term solution. That is why the municipal report itself, which the Síndic had access to, considers it appropriate to take additional measures, such as the construction of a submerged barrier and the modification of the southern breakwater in the area to prevent the entry of algae into the river again, causing stagnation.
