Dénia Hospital creates the "Shoulder School" for patients with chronic ailments

August 01 from 2011 - 10: 03

In Spain 1000 78 inhabitants each suffer from ailments shoulder and extremities. Of them only 40-50 between% consult the physician. For this reason the Hospital de Dénia has launched a new initiative for patients to learn to control their shoulder pain, teach them to implement measures so that the treatment is not so heavy and give them notions of pain prevention, as well as the anatomy of their shoulder. The goal is for patients to correct incorrect postures that are the most frequent cause of discomfort.

The "School Shoulder" of the Department of Health of Dénia, aimed at patients with chronic shoulder pain, works by grouping patients by packs of 30 people, and these are divided into sessions of six or eight patients who attend school for a month, two afternoons a week.

The first session consists of a theoretical class given by the Rehabilitation Physician. Placing the shoulders in slight external rotation, aligning them with the head, avoiding raising the arms above the head, pausing in repetitive work, stretching or avoiding sleeping with the head resting on an elevated arm, are some of the remedies that can manage to alleviate the pain and even eliminate it completely,

The following sessions are practical. At this point, patients attend sessions led by the Physiotherapist and learn a variety of techniques to improve mobility shoulder. Also they perform a series of exercises that, once learned, patients have to keep five days a week in their own home.
