Hospital de Dénia commitment prolonging breastfeeding after maternity leave

It breastfeed and work: we manage possible, was the title of the First Day of World Breastfeeding Week which it was held in the Hospital de Dénia this week. Dozens of nursing mothers and professionals of the sector attended the meeting, where the conflict of working mothers in the lactation stage was put on the table.

In the first talk, by the Chief of Preventive Medicine, Antonio Valdivia, the issue of how to breastfeed and work in risky environments was discussed. Valdivia said "Breastfeeding prevents disorders of the central nervous system and enhances the development of the immune system", and warned about the damages of certain addictions, such as tobacco and alcohol, since numerous studies confirm that they reduce the quality of breast milk.

The President of the Breastfeeding Committee, Marta Sánchez, spoke in her speech about a series of guidelines, such as the extraction and preservation of breast milk, so that mothers can reconcile work and family life. Sanchez stressed the need for employers, legislators and their own coworkers to become aware of the importance of breastfeeding.

Finally, the lawyer and professor specializing in labor law and family conciliation, Monica Tornadijo, said that "The economic crisis has led to a significant setback in terms of mothers' rights and conciliation. Spain is at the tail of Europe in number of maternity leave days ".
