The «Mediterranean bicycle corridor» passes by the Marina Alta

January 04 from 2019 - 12: 34

The European cycling tour Eurovelo, known as the "Mediterranean bicycle racer", forgets the region of the Marina Alta. It is a proposal promoted by the Generalitat that will cover 217 kilometers of the province of Alicante from Orxa to Orihuela, according to the route proposed by the Ministry of Housing, Public Works and Territorial Vertebration, which aims to unite all of Europe promoting sustainable mobility.

The route overlooks the Marina Alta in the stages that pass through the province of Alicante, where a total of five sections have been established.

The stages of the province of Alicante begin in the Valencian city of Gandia, and it has in L'Orxa the first municipality of Alicante. This stage ends in Muro d'Alcoi after touring Biarrés and Gaianes. The next stage starts from Muro d'Alcoi to pass through Cocentaina, Alcoi, Ibi and Castalla, a town where stage eight begins and that connects the municipalities of Tibi, Agost, Sant Vicent del Raspeig and Alicante.

From the end of stage eight in Alicante starts the stage nine linking Elx and Santa Pola, to reach the last stage of the route in the Valencian Community composed of Elx, San Fulgencio, Guardamar del Segura, Rojales, Formentera del Segura, Benijófar, Almoradí, Algorfa, Benejúzar, Jacarilla and Orihuela.

Curious, therefore, that it is a question of "Mediterranean corridor" and obviate the first stop of the Mediterranean in the province of Alicante.

The Director General of Public Works, Transport and Mobility, Carlos Domingo, said that this itinerary "It is an opportunity for the municipalities where it passes because it will be a focus of attraction for this type of tourism that will make our territory known".

Eurovelo is a project managed by the European Federation of Cyclists that aims to form a single transnational cyclist network in Europe. Currently, it already has more than 45.000 kilometers operating throughout Europe and once it has been fully completed it will exceed the 70.000 km of route.

The itinerary that runs through the Comunitat Valenciana is the route EV8-Mediterranean Route, with about 6.000 kilometers long and linking Cádiz and Athens, continuing through Cyprus, crossing 11 countries of the Mediterranean basin and its various regions.

The other Mediterranean Corridor is much more important, do not you think?

If in the past more resources have been dedicated to infrastructure such as greenway, bicycle lane, natural roads, etc. and there was a cyclist network in the Marina Alta, surely the Mediterranean Corridor would pass through there.
