The Libraries, Cultural Promotion and Archives areas of the Department of Culture of the Dénia City Council, in collaboration with the association Citizen Action against the impunity of the Franco regime, have organized for the months of April and May a conference on historical memory under the title " Memory and future ”.
Mayor, Vicent Grimalt, has attended this morning the presentation of the initiative, which is part "Of a broader project of recovery of the historical memory that from the government of the City Council of Dénia we have not stopped working in recent years".
As examples of this task of recovery and repair of the facts, the mayor has cited the project to convert the old municipal slaughterhouse into a space dedicated to historical memory, which was presented last week to the Minister of Participation, Transparency, Cooperation and Democratic Quality; or the cycle “Trash memory. Dénia, war and repression ”that the Municipal Historical Archive of Dénia organized in 2018, coinciding with the 80th birthday of the Civil War, and with which "We wanted to contribute to value historical memory in favor of a better democratic coexistence".
The mayor ended his speech by dedicating a few words of thanks to Joan Castejón, "Committed man and artist", which has given the image that illustrates the conference.
The councilman of Culture, Raúl García de la Reina, has given details of the program, which begins on April 9 with the opening of the collective photographic exhibition "Unearthed Memories" at the Center d'Art L'Estacio. The exhibition, which can be visited until April 25, offers different views on the exhumation processes of victims of the Franco regime buried in mass graves, mainly in the Paterna cemetery.
As a novelty, the Dénia exhibition will show for the first time images of the exhumations carried out recently at the Alicante cemetery, as announced by the secretary of the Citizen Action association against the impunity of the Franco regime, Lucila Aragón.
On April 9, the exhibition “1939, Memory of the withdrawal” also opens to the public at the Public Library on Carrer de Sant Josep. It is, as Raúl Garcia explained, a selection of texts, images, places and documentary collections that tell us about exile, concentration camps, resistance, cultural legacy and also internal exile.
That same day, at 19:53 p.m., the Library will host the presentation of Luz Quiñonero Miquel Grau's book 1977/1977. Quiñonero, journalist and president of the association Acción Ciudadana contra la impunidad de Franco, accompanied Miquel Grau on the day of his assassination in Alicante in XNUMX. In the presentation, the author will talk about who Miquel Grau was, what happened that day and what his death.
The program of "Memory and Future" continues on April 17 with the theatrical representation Encendidas, by the Hungarian Theater Company. A proposal where the actress and playwright Lola López travels through the vital and poetic universe of Paca Aguirre, accompanied by the guitar of José María Gallardo and the flamenco voice of Paco del Pozo. It will be at 19.30 pm, at the Social Center.
On Thursday, April 22, at 19.30:28 p.m., at the Social Center, two documentaries will be screened related to the Stanbrook ship and that journey that left the port of Alicante on March 1939, XNUMX bound for Algeria with refugees on board fleeing from war.
It is about Operation Stanbrook: trip to the Algerian exile, 75 years later, by the director Rosa Brines, and Helia, memory of the Stanbrook, directed by Sergi Pitarch. At the end, a discussion will begin with Rafael Arnal and Pasqual Moreno, members of the “Operation Stanbrook” initiative.
The conferences, as Lucila Aragón has indicated, also try to get closer to the most serious moment of repression and the one that the dictatorship meant. In this sense, the Secretary of Citizen Action against the impunity of the Franco regime recommends attending the conference that on May 6 will be offered by the professor of Philosophy of Law of the University of València, Cristina García Pascual, at 19:XNUMX p.m., in the Public Library . Under the title “A round with the past. Justice, memory and reparation ”, García Pascual will address the need to do justice from the perspective of the principle of universal justice. "The past is trivialized and people talk without having clear knowledge of what happened, that is why we need a society that has justice, memory and also reparation with the victims", Aragon has concluded.
And to finish this conference, there are two proposals from the Municipal Archive with a lot of relationship with Dénia and the Marina Alta. From May 13 to 26, an exhibition of photographs of the Civil War from the Manuel Usano Martí Collection of the Municipal Archives can be visited at the Casa de Cultura. This is the first time that the images of this collection, which was given by the family of Manuel Usano to the city council in 2019, have been exhibited.
It is a sample of the photographs taken during the Civil War by the doctor Manuel Usano. Images of the Teruel front with the Juan Marco battalion, made up of dianenses; from the Granada front; that of Córdoba and the Madrid front with the International Brigades.
Once this exhibition is finished in the House of Culture, it will be moved to the Public Library in June so that the public can continue to enjoy it.
On May 13, at 19.30:XNUMX p.m., the book will also be presented at the Casa de Cultura Brigadistas. The International Brigades in Benissa and Dénia (1937-1938), by its author, Robert Llopis i Sendra, winner of the Roc Chabàs Research Grant from the Dénia City Council. The book narrates a time in our history, when in the middle of the Civil War the first permit centers of the International Brigades were opened in Benissa and Dénia.
All activities with the public will be carried out in compliance with current anti-COVID regulations and, with the exception of exhibitions, require a prior reservation to be able to attend.
