Dénia signals the passage of the Greenwich meridian through the municipality

03 2018 April - 11: 38

Known as meridian zero, the meridian of Greenwich is the origin from which it takes measure of the lengths and receives this name because it passes through the Royal Observatory of Greenwich, municipality of London. This imaginary line that joins the North and South Poles crosses eight countries: the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Algeria, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo and Ghana.

In Spain, the Meridian 0 passes through municipalities such as Zaragoza, Castellón, El Verger or Llosa de Camacho, and also through Dénia. Now, the city indicates it thanks to a sign installed in the area of the Deveses. Specifically, on the highway Marines-Racons at kilometer point 9.800, an information panel of 2x1,5 meters printed on two sides has been placed in which it is specified: the name of the meridian, the latitude and longitude of the place and a world ball with the line that marks the zero meridian on the European continent, where the points of Dénia and Greenwich are indicated.

The initiative was picked up by the Dénia Municipal Council of Culture at the request of the Science and Technology Commission, which is the one that made the signaling proposal. This proposal also responds to the concerns of the Astronomical Association Marina Alta, who in the end has been the one who has collaborated with the Department of Culture regarding the technical and scientific aspects of the project.

  1. Jesus says:

    Well, they could put an arch on the road, paint on the sidewalks ... come on, something more colorful, than a sign. Well, a curiosity of those that is good and people like ... to others it will not say anything, but it is touristy.

  2. Leon says:

    It seems strange, if not impossible, that the indicated meridian can pass, among others, through Zaragoza, Castellón and Denia;
    unless said meridian follows a broken line
