As an act of making Dénia's adhesion to the # UnÁrbolPorEuropa campaign visible, the new olive tree at the roundabout at the intersection of Avenida del It montgó and Joan Fuster's plaque was placed yesterday that identifies this specimen as a symbol of the city's commitment to local sustainability.
The councilors of Ecological Transition, Maite Pérez, and Parks and Gardens, Pepe Doménech, departments that lead the participation of Dénia in this project of the European Parliament, joined this act of visibility requested by the Office of the European Parliament in Spain with the objective to make it known to the public.
Since the accession in November 2020 of the Dénia City Council to # UnÁrbolPorEuropa, which commits the administrations to work for the promotion of sustainability in the municipality, more than 120 trees have been planted in the city, the person in charge of Parks and Gardens highlighted , "In a conscious effort to make ours a greener city."
As examples, Doménech mentioned the 25 prunus on Carrer de la Vía and Camí d'Aranda, the replacement of a banana tree in Marqués de Campo, the 3 new jacarandas by Carlos Sentí, 12 liguster japonicum on Carrer de la Lancha and from May 11, the new plantations in the sports center area (5 ash trees, 5 catalpes and 6 cercis or trees of love) and the pomegranates of the Baix la Mar neighborhood, among others.
The # UnArbolPorEuropa campaign also invites member municipalities to encourage the involvement of the youngest in decision-making that affects sustainability at the local level. To comply with this commitment, the proposal of the Dénia City Council is to assign in each school center of the city a green area to repopulate, of the evolution of which after the plantations they will follow up to promote the awareness of children and adolescents .
The # UnÁrbolPorEuropa campaign currently has 500 participating Spanish municipalities, out of the 17 autonomous communities, in which more than 14.500 trees have been planted.
This campaign started from the manifesto of the same title born of the European Team of the Office of the European Parliament in Spain, as a result of a proposal by David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament.
The adhered municipalities undertake to plant a tree in their municipality, make visible the importance of sustainable development at the local level and involve young people in decision-making processes regarding sustainability.
