Dénia has become the viewpoint of cetaceans of the Mediterranean coast

27 March 2017 - 12: 48

The coast of Dénia has established itself as the place of Valencia in which more cetacean sightings are recorded every year. In the latest report from the Ministry of the Environment on cetacean sightings, Dénia 2016 has been in the area with more sightings in Valencia, highlighting the common whale species (Balaenoptera physalus).

Dolphins, whales and diversity of marine life can be seen in any season, but especially are more present since last May, both offshore and from the coast.

Throughout this month of March, the crew of the Marine and Fisheries Environmental Service (coastguard), a service co-managed by the City Council of Dénia and the Generalitat Valenciana, has carried out a study of cetacean frequentation, accompanied by a team from the Universitat of Valencia and staff of the Ministry of Environment. In the same morning they were able to observe a pair of bottlenose dolphins, off the coast of the beach of Marines, and a group of at least ten dolphins that were swimming in a northerly direction and that they accompanied to the port of Dénia.

These sightings of cetaceans are added those of different species of seabirds such as petrels, gannets and cormorants.

Objective: To raise awareness through knowledge

For this year 2017, the Environmental Marine and Fisheries Service, part of the Department of Environment, plans to conduct various campaigns study, dissemination and conservation of the marine environment around us.

In these campaigns, participate other public administrations and other bodies, the Fishermen's Association, individuals, NGOs and private companies, all united by the same goal: to combat marine pollution and poaching, increase awareness through different studies and greater preservation of the environment from awareness.
