Dénia will install containers of organic material to achieve the goal of recycling the 50% waste

05 October 2017 - 17: 07

The City of Dénia wants to get the city to meet one of the objectives that the European Union has set for the year 2020: that its inhabitants recycle or reuse the 50% of the waste generated, and that 2030 that recycling reach the 65%. A task that is based on a change of customs in the houses, where it is currently recycled between an 20 and 22% of the waste.

That is why for a few months the Department of Environment has increased the number of recycling containers in the city and has relocated them, with the aim of facilitating the recycling of neighbors. A fifth container for organic matter will be added to 2018 in those four containers (containers, paper, glass and generic). This type of containers, already implanted in countries of the north of Europe and in communities like País Vasco, Navarra or Catalonia, will be obligatory in 2020.

In these new containers we will have to deposit the remains of food and biodegradable products, as they will be used to compost. The first containers will arrive in a few months from the Generalitat Valenciana, which thanks to a grant from the European Union has acquired 900 units that will distribute free of charge among the municipalities of the Comunitat. In addition, Dénia has also acquired more containers to begin to implant them in the city.

The importance of recycling to our pocket

Councilman Environment, Josep Crespo, indicated that recycling is not only a necessary practice to take care of the environment, but thanks to it we can save on the garbage rate. And it is that, the waste that is not recycled goes to the Caragussos transfer plant and from there to the El Campello plant, where it is processed. In this plant, to which the waste from the Marina Alta, the Marina Baixa and the city of El Campello, charge the municipalities based on the tons of garbage they carry, an amount that is financed with the garbage tax that is paid annually.

In this way, if citizens recycle properly, less waste will be generated than lead to El Campello and the plant bill will decrease, which will allow the garbage rate to be reduced or, if not, to improve the services of collection of waste in the municipality.

It is estimated that currently every citizen of the country generates about 1,5 kg of garbage per day, while in northern European countries that figure is less than half a kilo. In this sense, the residents of Dénia could be considered "the best in the platoon of fools", since, although the municipality is above average in recycling figures, Alicante is one of the least recycled provinces in the country .

New Ecoparc Mobile schedules

With the aim of helping citizens to recycle, the Department of Environment and Climate Change have modified the locations and schedules of Ecoparc Móvil, which throughout the week travels around the city to pick up the neighbors' belongings.

On Monday and Friday afternoons, during the months of July and August, the eco-park has been installed in Les Deveses and Nova Dénia. After this summer period, the department is studying the possibility of covering these days, as well as Saturday afternoon, with new location points.
