The City Council of Dénia has awarded the company Beceite Forestal the executive project for the opening of a perimeter strip in the area of Les Rotes with the aim of improving the safety of people, homes and infrastructure; and reduce the risk of a forest fire spreading.

Apart from this main objective, these works also contemplate as particular objectives to facilitate the access of the firefighting equipment to the entire perimeter of the population center and to facilitate the access of the machinery for the execution of the vegetation treatment in the perimeter range and its subsequent maintenance.

The works to create the firewall began today, Monday, and are expected to last one month. The execution budget amounts to 49.136,29 euros, VAT included.

The opening of perimeter strips of low combustibility is one of the measures contemplated in the Local Forest Fire Prevention Plan of the municipality of Denia, currently in the approval phase. However, the city council has wanted to anticipate and undertake the conditioning of this strip in the Les Rotes area as a preventive measure.

To determine the layout of the perimeter strip, the municipal urban planning instruments are taken into account, as established by current sectoral legislation. Specifically, the classification of the land of the urbanization or population center has been analyzed, and the classification of the land is reviewed with the aim of determining which of these lands can be included in the perimeter strip without affecting the destination, connection or use that the municipal urban planning has reserved for them.

The low-combustibility perimeter strip that is being fitted out in the Les Rotes area has a total area of 16,7989 hectares, divided in the execution project into 16 sections, according to homogeneous surface, vegetation and access characteristics.

The works will consist of treating the existing vegetation to achieve the tree and undergrowth density established in the fire prevention criteria. This involves the felling of trees and the clearing of undergrowth. All trunks from tree carving will be chopped to a maximum of 1 meter and will be stacked near communication routes so that the neighborhood can collect them and use them in fireplaces.

Once the strip has been created, maintenance work will be carried out every two years consisting of clearing and shredding the undergrowth.
