Dénia, Eivissa and Cambrils receive one million euros in support for their Posidonia awareness project

The mayors of Dénia, Vicent Grimalt, Ibiza, Rafa Ruiz, and Cambrils, Oliver Klein, have announced this Tuesday the start-up in 2023 of the experiential ecotourism project Viu la posidònia, which is jointly developed by the three municipalities. The project has been selected by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, within the Spain Tourism Experiences program, and has been awarded 1.157.780 euros from the European Next Generation fund for its development.

To start the journey of the initiative, the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) has been chosen, which is held in Madrid next January. The three partner cities plan the opening in the Spanish capital, coinciding with the dates of the fair, of the exhibition posidonia jewels, where pieces of painting, ceramics and jewelry inspired by and/or made with this aquatic plant that inhabits the Mediterranean will be displayed.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is, as the mayor of Eivissenc, Rafa Ruiz, has pointed out, "to make posidonia an environmental value," due to the amount of oxygen it releases, its work as a barrier shield that prevents the sea from taking the sand of the beaches and for being an indicator of water quality”.

But also, as Vicent Grimalt, a tourist asset, has said, for which the work of dissemination and awareness towards visitors is very important, "that they understand that the presence of posidonia remains on our beaches is not dirt, but rather forms part of our ecosystem. Grimalt is confident that, when the project ends, "there will be a significant percentage of people aware of it", and stresses that "the involvement of the sector's business community in this task is very important", which should begin by "putting aside complaints about the presence of algae on the beaches.

The mayor of Cambrils, Oliver Klein, recalled that work began on the project nearly a year ago and stated with satisfaction that "the alliance between our cities has worked".

The installation of informative signage on the beaches, campaigns among the school population or the beaconing of areas with the presence of Posidonia are some of the actions contemplated in the project roadmap, which will be implemented over the next year.

What is Viu la posidonia?

It is a zero carbon footprint tourism product that promotes knowledge about a part of the marine ecosystem essential for the conservation of biodiversity on the coast, the cleanliness of the waters, the protection of the beach line against storms and the fixation of atmospheric carbon, all this through a set of activities compatible with the enjoyment of our beaches and the carrying out of active and healthy leisure practices.

In short, the project wants to help to get to know this plant that inhabits the seabed and contribute to raising awareness among the population that these algae that reach the beaches are proof of the health of the coast and a guarantee that our beaches will continue to be a place privileged.

Viu la posidònia seeks to create a specific tourist product around things that each population already does but not in a coordinated way.
