In recent months we have been receiving a lot of information about tests to detect COVID-19. To clarify it and make it closer, laboratories González It explains what they are and what they consist of.

Different tests to detect COVID-19

El PCR test It is perhaps the most famous, and it gives results in a period of 24 to 36 hours. The sample is taken with nasopharyngeal swabs. This test works by detecting nucleic acids from the virus, which are isolated and purified using automated procedures. Those nucleic acids are transcribed and amplified with the PCR test: in this process, the test probes recognize three specific SARS-CoV-2 gene sequences. The data generated is analyzed and interpreted by software. PCR is the most sensitive test with the fewest false negatives.

Within quick tests, which give results in about two hours, are:

  • new viral antigen result kits. They are slightly less sensitive than PCR, but have the advantage that they are much faster, cheaper and easier to use. This test also detects the presence of viral RNA, that is, of the genetic material of the coronavirus. It does not detect the trace of antibodies from a contagion that has already passed, but rather allows to identify an active infection at that moment.
  • And serological antibody tests, to know the immune status of people: with this test you find out if you have defenses against COVID-19.
