Compromís asks to create a municipal scholarship for children suffering from ADHD

10 March 2022 - 12: 20

Compromís met last week with representatives of the ADAHMA association, a group of mothers and fathers of children and adults who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in the Marina Alta and who are in charge of ensuring the improvement of the quality of life of people who suffer from this disorder. From the association, the need to rectify the requirement to access State aid and scholarships for students with special educational needs and with specific needs for educational support was transferred to the Valencians, expanding the criteria that facilitate the granting.

ADHD is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders in the child and adolescent population and has a neurobiological and hereditary origin, being according to the WHO the third most affected Mental Health disorder after anxiety and depression worldwide (around 7% in those under 25 years of age).

But due to an erroneous interpretation of ADHD by the Health Department and its categorization as a "serious behavioral disorder", a large part of the students with specific educational needs are left out when applying for Study Assistance Scholarships , as well as the subsidy for students with Specific Educational Support Needs (NESE), having to demonstrate a disability equal to or greater than 33% to be awarded scholarships by the Ministry of Education.

As explained by the mayor Eva Round "The new requirements, among which are to demonstrate a high level of disorder or disability, or the exclusion of some other learning disorders, causes thousands of students to be discarded from the aid bags, for which it is necessary to modify the requirements and criteria, and collect in the state regulatory texts the right of any student with ADHD to be guaranteed educational support”.

In addition, Ronda has commented that "this organization has been fighting for some time along with others from the Valencian Community to rectify the requirement to access the scholarships because many times the scholarships awarded are insufficient or do not reach all the applications due to different obstacles".

For this reason, the Valencianists also propose in their motion the creation of a scholarship or municipal aid aimed at families with members with NESE, for applications that have not received a scholarship or have not been able to justify previous scholarships, and as a complementary or alternative way to Ministry scholarship. "It is interesting in the sense that we have been informed that in the most recent publication of the BOE regarding the scholarship and aid regime, ADHD is not even considered as a student with specific educational needs" the councilor pointed out.

The Valencianists hope that "the different groups will join the initiative promoted by the associations, which hopes that we will support them to guarantee help to families that suffer difficulties in the correct training and education of their sons and daughters."
