Baleària and Global Ports Holding aspire to manage the new public passenger terminal in València

02 July 2020 - 15: 22

The shipping company Baleària presents an offer to the competition for the construction and operation under the administrative concession of the new public passenger terminal of the port of València (TPV), with the support of Global Ports Holding Plc, the largest operator of cruise terminals in the world.

The project, which would be a benchmark in the field of sustainability and innovation, includes two terminals with separate spaces, which would guarantee the independent operation of passengers on regular lines and cruise passengers. In this sense, the long-term agreement between Baleària and Global Ports Holding Plc (GPH), will allow GPH to contribute its experience to exclusively manage the operations of the new cruise terminal, and Baleària, the number one shipping company in the port of Valencia in volume of passengers, vehicles and ro-ro cargo, provides the know-how of its more than twenty years operating regular traffic, the last thirteen in that port.

The Smart Terminal project, which will preserve the historic buildings of the former Levante Naval Union, aims to be a benchmark in sustainability by applying the most efficient technologies with the least environmental impact. A terminal that would be 100% self-sufficient in electricity generated by renewable energies (photovoltaic, wind, renewable hydrogen and biofuel) and that would recycle all the waste generated, in a clear commitment to the circular economy. This infrastructure will be located on a total area of approximately 100.000 m2 located between the Poniente Pier and the Espigón del Turia Pier.

"The synergies between two leading companies in their sector will allow the city of Valencia to have a modern terminal, with the best technological and operational solutions to service the port, the city and society", has highlighted Adolfo Utor, President of Baleària, who has recalled the shipping company's commitment to the 2030 Agenda and the objectives of sustainable development: "This new terminal includes three fundamental axes of our social responsibility: sustainable economic growth, but also the preservation of the planet, thanks to its eco-efficiency, and equal opportunities, to which, for example, the training school planned in the project will contribute very focused on the maritime district and specifically on the Nazareth neighborhood ”. The objective is for the terminal, located in buildings of high heritage, architectural and historical value, to become the maritime gateway to the city.

“We are delighted to collaborate with Baleària. Two leading companies in their sector have partnered and we are sure that this will result in the good of the port and the city. Valencia is an essential destination for the development of cruises in this area of the Mediterranean and will help us consolidate our position in the Western Mediterranean ”, highlights Emre Sayin, CEO of GPH.
