November 30 from 2018 - 12: 42

After almost two years of work, the renovation work on the house on San José Street has been completed. The building, which will house the Library and part of the Municipal Archive, has an area of 2.091 square meters divided into a basement, three floors, terrace and a tower.

This Friday morning, the General Secretary of Housing of the Ministry of Development, Helena Beunza, along with the sub-delegation of the government in Alicante, Araceli Poblador, visited, accompanied by the mayor and councilors of the City Council, the result of the works.

The works have been financed entirely by the Ministry of Development, with a budget of 1.495.204,68 euros, and executed by the company Edhinor.

A heritage building of the city

The building of San Jose Street, number 6, was an old manor house from the late nineteenth century, which was transformed and subdivided in a residential building with houses on each floor and premises on the ground floor in the mid-20th century. until, at the end of the last century, it became municipal ownership, installing the Retirement Home there.

The central staircase, made of marble and with a spectacular wooden handrail, has been maintained from the original building. The original windows have also been preserved, with their bars and stained glass windows. In the rehabilitation, another staircase has been built, which will act as an emergency staircase, which leads directly to the carrer de la Morería.

The house, plant by plant

The basement houses the water tank of the fire extinguishing system and a warehouse to store the internal material.

On the ground floor we find the reception and a space for reading the press and rest. There is also the children's library, and in the back the auditorium, designed as a multipurpose wing where it is foreseen that there will be storytelling, talks or book presentations. Here is also a deposit for the Municipal Archive.

On the first floor there is a large open room where the library will be located. The walls will be covered with bookshelves, and tables will be set up throughout the room so that users can connect their electronic devices.

On the second floor there will be two more library rooms, designed to place reference books and reference works, which now have a smaller use, and, above all, more tables with an electrical connection. This plant is divided into two rooms to be able to give it a more private use: courses may be carried out punctually or the space may be dedicated to group work, among other things.

In this plant is also the restricted area of the Municipal Arxiu (investigators room), a deposit of the Archive and another for the library, where to keep the books that have less use.

On the third floor is the terrace, which with time and adequacy, can be used for various activities such as book presentations or awards. Finally, in the tower will be the administration office of the library.

It will be operational at the beginning of the year

Once the works have been completed, it is important to know when it will come into operation. The municipal librarian, Llucia Signes, explained that it is expected that, at the end of January, the building will be furnished and the transfer from the offices of the Municipal House of Culture.

To carry out the transfer, it is estimated that the services of the library will be paralyzed for a week.
